Located just minutes north of Stratford on Perth Road 121, and only a short drive from St. Jacobs and Kitchener-Waterloo, the village of Millbank has many treasures waiting to be discovered.
Early settlers from Northern Ireland transformed the virgin forest into productive farms and an enterprising community. These pioneers erected a saw mill and grist mill on the banks of the Nith River. The picturesque scene of the mill on the bank of the river led to the name Millbank by which the village has been known ever since.
Plans are shaping up to celebrate the 160 Years since the pioneers arrived with a Homecoming Weekend Aug 1-3, 2008, including a School Reunion – the present building was built in 1908, a Historical Building Walkabout, Community Worship Service, displays of historical artifacts, antique cars and tractors, and an outdoor play about Millbank produced by Jeff Dale. Jack Nahrgang is writing a historical book that will be available in the spring of 2008.
As you visit Millbank and area today, echoes of the past murmur on, as evident in the many unique shops. The wide variety of stores display handcrafted quilts, furniture, antiques, collectibles, crafts, gifts, hardware, groceries, and seasonal garden seeds and potting plants, and fruits of finest quality. Anna Mae's Bakery & Restaurant's old fashioned home country cooking fully satisfies many appetites. The Cheese Store sells a variety of cheddar and specialty cheeses, fair trade foods etc. If an exciting family experience is something you're after, be sure to explore the world's largest corn maze, just north of Newton and don't forget to visit Newton's quaint little fabric and craft stores.
Share your parking space in Millbank and Newton with horse-drawn buggies as the Old Order Amish and Mennonites do their shopping. For a better understanding of their way of life, make an appointment ( ) to see the DVD: The Amish: A People of Preservation.
Shop like you have never experienced before, and then stay at one of the local hospitable Bed and Breakfasts. All this and more promises to make this a visit you'll remember.
